In 1959, Syd Nathan formed a budget subsidiary label called Audio Lab and during a three year period released a lot of material that had never appeared in album form, including rare albums by Bullmoose Jackson, Annie Laurie, April Stevens, Sticks McGhee and John Lee Hooker, Lattie Moore, Will Penny, the Light Crust Doughboys, and H-Bomb Ferguson.

How Scientists Visualize the REAL Flying Saucer Men

When scholars of the universe recreate spacemen along logical scientific lines, even those supposed weird little saucerites seem ordinary by comparison.

PRYING eyes of science are probing into space again in the hope of detecting life on other planets. Armed with new facts, previously accepted theories about what lies beyond the Earth are being discarded by scientists every day and the possibility grows more and more distinct that creatures, more fantastic than our most vivid imaginations could conjure up, may inhabit the planets around us. They make those startling stories of weird little men in flying saucers seem tame by comparison.

Dr. Henry Norris Russell of Princeton recently threw a bombshell into scientific circles when he said: “It appears now to be probable that the number of inhabited worlds within the galaxy is considerable. To think of thousands, or even more, now appears far more reasonable than to suppose that our planet alone is the abode of life and reason.”

And H. Spencer Jones, Britain’s Astronomer Royal and one of the world’s most noted inter-planetary authorities, declares: “It is reasonable to suppose that life on any other world will have developed along forms that are entirely different from any with which we are familiar and that are possibly beyond our conception.”

Just how would those inhabitants look? Could they be men, beasts, plants or a combination of all three? To get the answer, experts in the field were polled. This question was put to them: “Knowing what we do about conditions on other planets”differences in the constitution of the atmosphere, in the proportion of land and water, the temperatures and other phenomen”what kind of people could conceivably inhabit them?”

Some startling answers resulted. However, all the experts pointed out one vital fact: on most planets, life as we know it cannot exist. An earthman would die at once on Mercury, his organs ruptured by the boiling of his blood in the tremendous heat of the sun”if he weren’t asphyxiated for lack of oxygen and dried up by lack of water. But the experts all agreed it is entirely possible that other planets may have developed their own life forms, entirely different from ours, suited to the very, very special conditions existing on their worlds!

Let’s go planet-hopping and take a look at a portrait gallery painted by the imaginations of inter-planetary experts.

First to Venus because it is most like the earth in weight and size and, except for the moon, comes closer to us than any other globe. Scientists are convinced that the planet Venus has an atmosphere, but it is composed almost entirely of carbon dioxide, with no detectable free oxygen. No evidence of water vapor has been observed, hence the surface of the planet must be largely desert, with no rivers, lakes or oceans.

What kind of people can live there? John W. Campbell, Jr., a profound student of extra-terrestial life who is editor of Astounding Science-Fiction, a magazine which has successfully prophesied many of the most astounding recent scientific discoveries, says: “Life can exist on Venus without oxygen. Here on earth we have micro-organisms which can stay alive in sulphuric acid and kerosene. Undoubtedly there are life forms which can take the oxygen from carbon dioxide, and why can’t these be creatures of flesh?”

Would a Venus man look vaguely like a human? “Why not?” counters Mr. Campbell. “After all, the human form on Earth represents two billion years of experimental engineering on the part of nature. It is the best possible form to do the things it has to. There is every reason to suppose that life on Venus, or on any other planet, if it has developed to a high level, has taken human form. But this form would have to conform to the specific conditions of the planet.”

Thus, Mr. Campbell points out, the lungs of a Venus inhabitant would have to be designed to perform a special function of extracting oxygen from carbon dioxide and his body cells would have a different chemical nature than ours. Now, since carbon dioxide is an extremely poor source of oxygen, a Venus man would have to breathe in considerable amounts to extract oxygen, hence his lungs would be developed to enormous size, giving him a tremendous barrel chest.

His food, Mr. Campbell says, would consist of fats and hydrocarbons. Trying to get life energy from these sources is like trying to burn gasoline under water”it can be done, but you need an awful lot of gas. Therefore, a Venus man would have a grossly protuberant belly and heavy, columnar legs to support his bulk. Because his energy source is poor, his movements would be lumbering and sluggish. And since he must eat such huge quantities, he would literally eat himself out of house and home, living a nomadic life, constantly on the prowl for food.

For this reason, Mr. Campbell thinks that the existence of a high culture on Venus is extremely doubtful since culture develops when people don’t have to spend all their time just keeping alive. The Venus man would have no time to think, hence the race would be virtually beastlike.

Now let’s leap to Mars and observe a Martian as described by Major James R. Randolph, engineer, mathematician and physicist, who taught at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, N. Y., and Rhode Island State College and lectures extensively on interplanetary subjects. This is his conception of a Mars inhabitant: He has slender arms and legs, a large chest, wide, flaring nostrils and a broad mouth. His head would be about a quarter the size of his body; his eyes would be dark-adapted, with wide pupils. His size is problematical” Major Randolph’s guess is that he would be about four feet tall but he frankly admits there is no real basis for the assumption.

Now, why would a Martian look like this? Gravity on Mars is only 38 per cent of what it is on earth, hence everything would be easier to push, pull, pick up and carry. If everything weighs less, there would be less need for muscle, hence the reed-like limbs.

Why the large chest, the wide mouth and nostrils? There is considerable evidence that Mars has an atmosphere but it is extremely thin and the pressure is very low. Now, says Major Randolph, since air occupies more space if there is less pressure, a Martian would have to take much more air into his lungs than we do and oversize organs would result.

The mouth and nostrils would be wide for the same reason”larger air spaces would be required. The head, encompassing a normal brain, would be the size of an earthman’s thus disproportionate to the rest of his body.

Now come to Jupiter and prepare for a shock. Inhabitants who can conceivably live there are really something to see. The conditions on this planet are such that Jupiter man would have to be short, squat, with tremendous muscular developments and no eyes in his head! Yet despite this, he would be able to see in his own way.

Mr. Campbell explains: “The massive muscles would evolve because gravity on Jupiter is two and a half to three times that of earth, requiring the expenditure of considerable energy. The atmosphere is so dense and deep that it is perpetual, unrelieved night, making eyes useless, hence undeveloped.

“But why couldn’t a Jupiter man see by a built-in sonar system, much like bats?”

Next, we call on Saturn, Uranus and Neptun the cold, remote wastes of the solar system. The atmospheres of these giant ‘ planets are known to contain hydrogen, marsh gas, helium, ammonia (on Saturn) and no oxygen at all. Such an atmosphere is poisonous to Earth men.

However, Fletcher Pratt, famous military and naval analyst and inter-planetary researchist, says: “Knowing what we know about these three giant planets, any life form there must be completely different from ours. It would have to use a nitrogen instead of an oxygen base, with lungs and other internal apparatus designed in such a way as to extract nitrogen from the atmospheric gases.”

Because of the known difficulty of extracting nitrogen from methane and ammonia, the creatures would have to possess enormous intake surfaces, and since gravity on the three planets is extremely high, they would possess heavy, squat forms. Light would be absent because of the distance of the planets from the sun, hence, like Jupiter men, the inhabitants would not have eyes but “some sort of organ to keep from running into things.”

Mercury, the fastest-moving planet in the solar system, has three lands one of eternal day, one of eternal night and the third (the so-called intermediate zone) a land of light and darkness. The land of night is intensely cold, the land of day burning hot. But the sun alternately rises and sets in the area in between, producing temperature variations.

Kenneth Heuer, lecturer at the Hayden Planetarium in New York City and author of the book Men of Other Planets, tells how a Mercurian might look.

He would follow the shifting sun every moment to stay in the most favorable zone, Mr. Heuer says. This means that he would be on the move practically every minute, would have no definite home, hence no culture could arise. A Mercurian would probably be four-footed, to make locomotion simpler. His food would consist of lower forms of vegetation, such as lichens on rocks. And again, because of the extremely tenuous atmosphere, the inhabitant would have a deep chest and large breathing orifices.

Now, between Mars and Jupiter are more than 50,000 tiny worldsminor planets called asteroids which have not been able to hold any atmosphere. They are airless, waterless, barren wastes. Hence, Mr. Heuer believes no life such as we are familiar with could possibly exist. No life, that is, except . . .

“Why couldn’t mineral life exist there?” he asks. Rock men?

“Exactly. Mineral life could best withstand the conditions which, as far as we know, are totally devoid of any animal life-sustaining factors.” How would they move or talk?

“They wouldn’t move. They would remain eternally where they are. And why couldn’t they communicate with one another by some form of telepathy?”

There you have them the creatures of other worlds as come to life in the scientific imaginations of the experts. Perhaps in centuries to come, man will span the vast reaches of the universe and at long last come face to face with his neighbors in space.

Until that time, however, we can only sit at our instruments, study the heavens and, based on what we see, let our imagination roam into other worlds.

Long awaited, but still not here ... Cherry promised us a new release in 2010, but it looks like we will have it in winter/spring 2011. The last release was in 2007, what the hell are they doing ? They have been busy in touring and composing new songs, e.g. for the movie zombies from outerspace and they have been pretty busy for Rhythm Bomb Records. Doug Wilshire - and his very rare 1967 Vailant VC ...

Doug Wilshire plays a two-neck Hawaiian steel guitar in city pubs and drives a '67 Valiant.

And somehow it all makes good sense. The 45-year-old came to Australia in 1982 when he was 17 to play in our pubs chasing the success of Aussie pub bands Australian Crawl, Men at Work and Mental as Anything.
"I came out here and joined a rockabilly band in Sydney," he says. "I've earned my living playing music full time ever since."

Wilshire also trained as a mechanic, so when the opportunity to "earn some good money" came up maintaining the massive dragline excavators in the North Queensland mine fields, he jumped at it. "I only work three days a week up here and then fly back to Brisbane where I can continue to play my music. "When I get more money up here, I'll be able to whack a great big huge donk in the Valiant."
This jumble of jobs and passions seems to fit like a jigsaw puzzle for Wilshire. His day begins at 3am when he starts a 12-hour shift keeping the big excavators running '24/7'. And he's been working on some of the biggest of them all.

"Dragline 37 at Peak Downs is the largest in the southern hemisphere," he says. "It weighs a couple of million pounds (about 900 tonne) and the bucket alone holds over 1500 cubic metres which is the equivalent of a house. It runs on a 66,000 volt electric motor and plugs into a giant wire about 8 inches (20cm) across."
His love of big machinery extends to his passion for Chryslers. "I bought the Valiant off a guy who worked for Compass airlines and when they went bust he had to sell," he says. "He had done some of the work on it; air shocks, turquoise paint and 1970s Jelly Bean mag wheels. "The car picked me. I had to have it."
The car is a 1967 Chrysler Valiant VC Regal powered by a 225 (3.6-litre) six-cylinder Hemi with a single-barrel Carter RBS downdraft carburettor.

"If I could get my hands on a Special I would. The Regal is the one below," he says. "I got it for just $1500 in 2006. It was a bargain. It only had 6000 miles (9656km) on the clock. I've redone the trim on the doors, rebuilt the carby, put new valve seats in as it was blowing some smoke, and a bigger exhaust. "I put 225mm tyres on the back and 190s on the front. When I pump up the air shocks the back looks high like a '60s Mopar muscle car. One day I'll put a 360 (5.9-litre) Hemi in it. It's got the engine bay big enough for it."
Wilshire likes old Chryslers because they have "more style than any Ford or Holden".
"My dad was a Ford man and my brother was GM man, but not me. "You can always tell a Chrysler product. Even their PT Cruiser and 300C. They have that retro style that I like. "My dream car is an AP1 or AP2 1957-59 Chrysler Royal. I'm looking for one right now. They have the biggest fins in Australia. "Fins should make a comeback."

The fins, the retro car ... It all seems to fit with Wilshire's music and his sense of style. "The way I look - tattoos, clothes - it's all retro," he says. "I've been into it since grade 3 when I saw Sha Na Na. They played at Woodstock and I looked at them and I just clicked with that era."
Wilshire followed rockabilly band the Stray Cats in the '80s and became good friends with guitarist Brian Setzer, recently playing support in Brisbane on the Stray Cats reunion tour. "He's one of the main reasons I wanted to play guitar. I even have a big Stray Cats tat on my left shoulder."

Wilshire will launches his new solo "rockabilly, roots and blues, and western swing" album, Cuz Of You, with his band the Tailspinners at the 18th annual Brisbane Blues Festival on March 13 at the Jubilee Hotel in Fortitude Valley.

Wilshire's music should even score him cheap rego. "I might put this on concessional rego and just use it for club meets. I play a lot of car club gigs, so I can use it a fair bit legally," he says.

Baskets Rolled Him To Riches

    Grocer S. N. Goldman looked at a folding chair and came up with a $1,000,000 idea-collapsible wire pushcarts.

    MOST folks look too far away for that “big chance.” It’s usually right in front of you, just daring you to do something about it.

    S. N. Goldman, of Oklahoma City, believes this. He can prove it, too, because he’s built a multi-million-dollar business on the side, away from his regular business with a product known around the world, just by “looking close.”

    Goldman is a groceryman. He operates 30 huge super-markets in Oklahoma in his Standard & Humpty Dumpty chain. But he’s just a little guy in the grocery business compared with some firms and yet many of his competitors couldn’t get along without him.

    You see Goldman also owns the Folding Carrier Corp. of Oklahoma City, a firm name you’ll find stamped probably on eight out of 10 baskets-on-wheels which you push around the local grocery store, drug store, or perhaps in your office. The business is only 16 years old, yet it’s grown in that time from a small back room with a man and a boy making baskets, to a huge factory in a six-story building with 350 regular employees. And the growth came during a war period when the factory was shut down for months at a time for lack of steel. But it’s a good thing for all of us, grocers and consumers alike, that Goldman did make a success of his venture for it has contributed in huge measure to creating the modern super-market, which in turn has reduced your grocery bill an estimated 9 per cent.

    The whole thing started in Goldman’s sparsely-furnished office in Oklahoma City in 1937. He was then operating 10 small serve-yourself grocery stores where customers shopped with baskets on their arms.

    Competition was rough. Everyone was cutting prices. That was all right, too, if the groceryman could figure out new ways to sell more groceries per customer and reduce his expenses Goldman virtually lived in his stores those days. He had noticed that most women began to slow their buying just the minute their baskets got too heavy.

    His clerks had been trained to watch the customers, take the filled baskets and present them with empty ones. Then the clerks would help carry the filled baskets. It all helped business.

    But Goldman knew that he would never increase his sales per customer until he figured out a way for a woman to carry more groceries without getting tired. While he thought about it one day he stared unseeingly at a folding chair just an ordinary folding chair there in his office.

    Suddenly he “looked close,” saw the chair, and got an idea. He called in a workman Goldman is no mechanic, he insists and told the man, “See if you can’t put a basket on that chair where the seat is and another down near the floor and put the whole thing on wheels.”

    The workman tried. But the basket wouldn’t fold. It took up too much room in the store. There it sat in the corner for weeks until Fred Young came to work for Goldman as a maintenance man.

    Goldman asked Young to see what he could do with the basket and made some suggestions. Young went out into the shop and when he came back he had exactly what Goldman wanted a folding basket on wheels.

    Together they made some minor adjustments and then Young, with the help of a high-school boy who came in afternoons, built the first dozen or so carriers. They were put into the stores in Oklahoma City. But nothing happened. One woman couldn’t unfold them. And a man thought they were “too sissy.” He didn’t want to push around a baby buggy.

    Still, Goldman knew he had something and broke a series of advertisements in local newspapers, pointing out that you no longer had to carry baskets while shopping at his stores. Gradually more and more women tried the carts and Young got busier and busier making them.

    Grocerymen really watch each other’s methods. Word of Goldman’s carriers spread fast and by the time the Super-Market Institute met in 1938 in Chicago, he was asked to make a report on his new gadget. He did and found himself in the manufacturing business.

    The new rolling baskets created all kinds of problems. For instance, when it came to checking purchased items out it was necessary to lead the customer down one aisle, the empty basket down another. Goldman developed the split check stand to solve that one. But many a store owner didn’t want to cut up his expensive store fixtures for a new-fangled cart.

    By 1939, Goldman was shipping baskets out of Oklahoma City by the carload. He was getting orders for 500, then 1,000 and in some cases as many as 18,000 at a time. The first baskets were pretty crude affairs but very serviceable at that. They were made of painted metal. As the basic need was recognized, competitors sprang up with baskets of their own and Fred Young was kept busy creating new and better models for Goldman.

    The Folding Basket Carrier Corp., as it was then known, was just beginning to roll nicely when war came, cutting off supplies of steel. The company went back to wood but it wasn’t as satisfactory and it wasn’t as pretty. And the need, if anything, was even greater.

    The baskets appeared in Navy offices to carry documents and papers, in the War Department, in insurance offices, even in hospitals for the carrying of linens, and for the Red Cross to distribute candy, gum, and other comforts to wounded service men. The company turned to the making of war materials, including shower cabinets for defense housing and certain bomb elements made of metal.

    Goldman’s carriers, by now, were going all over the world and their uses were increasing. When the war ended he turned his production back to making grocery-store pushcarts with even greater success than before. He found a new market, too, in wire baskets to be used in quick-freezing cabinets for frozen foods. The baskets make it possible to set a whole load into the frozen food locker at home in a second, thus reducing the time the doors are open.

    A Kansas City inventor, trying to do the folding carrier job a bit better, came up with the “nesting” principle for the carts, which took up even less room than the usual folding jobs. Goldman liked the idea. He had both the factory and the market for the baskets. He now pays a royalty to the inventor and manufactures Nes-Karts in his big plant.

    But he was still looking for new ideas to please the customers. Store managers noticed that their customers’ children wanted to push the carts around but they could hardly reach them. So the children who want to ride along now are supplied with a seat in the big baskets, which have been engineered to be both safe and clean. And the larger children now have junior-size carriers to push around the super-markets. Many a manager, even in Goldman’s chain, were afraid of them. They figured that the kiddies probably would load up the baskets and then leave them making it necessary for one or more employees to waste time putting the items back.

    But it hasn’t worked that way. Actually mothers are glad to have the little carts because now the children are being taught how to buy things on their own.

    Another surprising thing is the way grown women and men will grab the junior-size carts when they’re in a hurry for a few items, push them around and end up quickly at the checking counter.

    The folding carrier has become, officially, the insignia of the Super-Market Institute. And well it might, because without it, such a plan of merchandising just wouldn’t be possible.

    “Imagine, if you can,” says Goldman simply, “a woman carrying even a small basket all over a huge modern store with all the items that we have to sell now.”

    As late as 1929 the average groceryman figured that he had to have at least 25 per cent mark-up, or gross profit, to make ends meet. He had to have that much to pay clerks, rent, light, heat and all the other expenses of doing business. And even then, his profits were very narrow.

    Building folding carriers is really a sideline with Goldman. It’s been his hobby a mighty profitable one, though. And the company is still growing. A modern cadmium-plating plant has been erected to replace the old paint shop that caught fire and destroyed the plant in 1948, killing two men.

    Goldman’s “hobby” history is now recorded in a scrap book filled with early orders, advertisements and reports from around the world telling where Americans have found the baskets in service. They are now being used in Canada, Bermuda, Argentina, Hawaii, Austria, Australia, Colombia, Sweden, Venezuela, Mexico, Belgium, Puerto Rico, Switzerland and Denmark.

    Several years ago he shipped six of them to Russia. He’s expecting to hear, almost any day now, about how Russia has come up with the great invention really did it first”which reduced America’s grocery bill. But meanwhile, he gets a big kick out of watching a mother wheeling a big carrier, with one child riding in a special folding seat and another child pushing a smaller basket all shopping.

    And he gets a big chuckle, too, out of the idea that his biggest competitors in the grocery business are also his biggest customers.

A word about free downloads. Yes its really cool that people are offering downloads for free. We really enjoy to download old LPs and singles. Many of the stuff is already out of copyright. As you can see on our blogspot site, we are offering downloads from out of copyright / public domain stuff too. Thats cool.

Its not cool to offer free downloads from stuff that you dont own. Thats illegal. We at Rhythm Bomb care for our artists and need to SELL CDs to cover our cost. Thats the game. No money - no new music.

Since last year we have a zero tolerance strategy. We are reporting EVERY illegal download from stuff that is owned by us or our bands.

If you want to support your favourite bands, go to their gigs and buy a CD.

Here are some Dos and Donts about downloads:

Cool:

- rip your old 45s and put them online for download
- open a blog and share your collection to other music lovers
- promote bands, put flyer online, promote their gigs
- go to their gigs, drink some beer and buy their CDs
- care about other peoples rights

Uncool:

- upload albums without asking for permission
- upload the full high rez artwork (this is copyrighted too)
- make money with the stolen rights (bootlegs, CD-Rs, donations)

Here is what is legal in the EU: all recordings prior 1957 are free of copyright (public domain). You can use them, burn them on CD, sell them. All recordings that are at least 50 years old and have been released 50 years ago can be used too. Its legal to overdub them from the original format. Its not legal to copy them from a Bear Family box set. So you need to own the original format (vinyl). Its not legal to use recordings and artwork that is younger than 50 years, except you are asking the owner for permission.

To make it clear - if you offer illeagal downloads, records companies might take you to court and this will cost you a lot of $$$. Thats really not worth to try it.

2) Billy Walker sings "Beautiful Brown Eyes" with some cowboy harmonizing behind him.

3) Leroy Jenkins (obviously not the avant-garde jazz violinist Leroy Jenkins) sings "I'm Crying but Nobody Cares".

4) Toby Toliver does some corn-pone comedy.

5) The Light-Crust Doughboys do an instrumental with fiddle and mandolin breaks (plus atmospheric pedal steel in the background the whole time, except when the steel takes a solo).

6) Lefty comes back and sings "I Want to Be with You Always" (as good as his Columbia studio version!)

7) Ray Price sings Frizell's "If You're Ever Lonely Darlin'"

8) Betty Johnson takes it out with the hymn "An Evening Prayer".
